Saanich Zero Waste Strategy

Saanich’s 2020 Climate Plan identified the need for a community wide zero waste strategy.

Development of the strategy was approved by Council in May 2024 and the first phase of engagement took place later that year. The strategy will establish the vision, targets, and pathway necessary for Saanich to become a zero-waste community.

The strategy will align with the extensive work already underway in the region and will focus on curbing consumption patterns, improving diversion rates, and implementing circular economy opportunities. Not only will this work contribute to reducing our environmental and climate impacts, but it will also support local economic development and the maintenance of healthy and vibrant communities for the future.

Thank you for your input into the draft Zero Waste Strategy. The survey closed on April 7 and staff are reviewing comments and updating the Strategy accordingly.

The draft Strategy has been informed by research and data analysis, and input from technical experts, the public, and community representatives.

The goal of the Strategy is to significantly reduce the amount of waste our community generates. Our target is to reduce our per capita waste generation from 318kg/year to 250kg/year by 2031, 240kg/year by 2040, and 125kg/year by 2050. Getting to zero waste will require looking at what we buy and use, how we build, the food we eat, and how we deal with the waste we produce.

Your input will be incorporated into the final Zero Waste Strategy to ensure that its programs and initiatives are customized to meet the needs of Saanich’s diverse residents. Waste is a collective challenge, but also an opportunity. Eliminating waste can be a great way to conserve resources, protect our natural spaces, and save money!
