Carey Road Sidewalk Upgrade

The District of Saanich will be undertaking active transportation upgrades along Carey Road. The Carey Road Sidewalk Upgrade project will deliver upgraded concrete sidewalks, curb drops, and related improvements to support safe and accessible travel for residents of all ages and abilities.

📅 April 23 Update

Crews have begun construction on Carey Road, starting near Ridgebank Crescent on the east side of the roadway and progressing north.

During construction, single-lane alternating traffic will be in place, with traffic controlled by flaggers. Lane closures will be in effect between 9:00am and 3:00pm to minimize impacts during peak travel times.

Access details for this phase:

Access for residents and local traffic will remain open.

Motorists should expect delays during lane closure periods and are encouraged to plan travel times accordingly.

Construction will continue to progress north along Carey Road as work advances. Updates will be posted here as construction conditions change.

📅 April 9th Update

Crews are expected to begin construction in late April or early May on Carey Road as part of the upcoming infrastructure improvements in the area.

Additional information will be posted closer to the start date. Residents are encouraged to subscribe to the project page to receive future updates by email.

Project overview

This project is a short-term priority under Saanich’s Active Transportation Plan and the Safe Routes to School program for Northridge Elementary and Glanford Middle School.

Construction will be delivered in phases, beginning with improvements on Carey Road between Gerda Street and Ridgebank Crescent (Phase 1).

Phase 1 scope (Gerda Street to Ridgebank Crescent)

  • New raised crosswalks spanning Carey Road at Gerda Street and at Ridgebank Crescent
  • New sidewalk on the east side of Carey Road between Gerda Street and Ridgebank Crescent
  • New asphalt for the roadway between Gerda Street and Ridgebank Crescent
  • Landscaping in areas where there is a new separated sidewalk between the road edge and sidewalk

Future project phases

Subsequent phases will address additional sections of Carey Road to create a continuous, accessible route for pedestrians and cyclists. While final details will be determined as design progresses, future work is expected to include:

  • Filling in remaining sidewalk gaps along Carey Road
  • Upgrading intersections with accessible curb drops
  • Enhancing connections to bus stops and park trail systems
  • Improving drop-off zones at Northridge Elementary
  • Installing upgraded cycling and pedestrian crossings at key intersections
  • Adding new stormwater infrastructure and street tree plantings where feasible

Further details on these future phases will be shared as planning and design are completed.

Why these upgrades?

Carey Road serves as an important link for families, students, and commuters, with transit connections to the Royal Oak Exchange, Uptown Shopping Centre, and Downtown Victoria. Current pedestrian infrastructure is inconsistent, with gaps and varying sidewalk types and widths. By upgrading sidewalks and crossings, the project will make walking and cycling safer options for all users.

These improvements are part of our ongoing efforts to support the Official Community Plan, Carey Local Area Plan, and the Active Transportation Plan, and will help foster a connected, pedestrian- and cycling-friendly neighbourhood.

Key benefits

  • Continuous, accessible sidewalks for pedestrians
  • Safer crossings and improved connections for students walking or biking to Northridge Elementary and Glanford Middle School
  • Enhanced access to transit stops and local parks

What to expect

During construction, efforts will be made to minimize inconvenience for residents and maintain access to homes, schools, and transit.
