Carey Road Sidewalk Upgrade
Project overview
The District of Saanich will be undertaking active transportation upgrades along Carey Road. The Carey Road Sidewalk Upgrade project will deliver upgraded concrete sidewalks, curb drops, and related improvements to support safe and accessible travel for residents of all ages and abilities.
This project is a short-term priority under Saanich’s Active Transportation Plan and the Safe Routes to School program for Northridge Elementary and Glanford Middle School.

Phase 2 construction is officially underway as of August 17, 2026

Sidewalk construction is now underway on Carey Road between Judah Street and Ridgebank Crescent. Construction hours will be from 7:00am to 3:30pm.
During this period, single-lane alternating traffic is in effect. All vehicles will continue to have access, but motorists should expect some delays. Traffic control personnel and signage are in place. Please follow their directions and observe all posted signs.
Access details for this phase:
- Single-lane alternating traffic is managed by flaggers to maintain safety and flow.
- Access for residents and local traffic remains open throughout construction.
- Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time for travel and consider alternate routes if possible.

This phase includes improvements on the east side of Carey Road between Judah Street and Ridgebank Crescent, including:
- New and upgraded sidewalk sections, filling remaining sidewalk gaps.
- Enhanced connections to bus stops and improved bus stop accessibility.
- Accessible intersection crossings.
- New stormwater infrastructure.
- Street tree plantings where feasible.
Why these upgrades?
Carey Road serves as an important link for families, students, and commuters, with transit connections to the Royal Oak Exchange, Uptown Shopping Centre, and Downtown Victoria. Current pedestrian infrastructure is inconsistent, with gaps and varying sidewalk types and widths. By upgrading sidewalks and crossings, the project will make walking and cycling safer options for all users.
These improvements are part of our ongoing efforts to support the Official Community Plan, Carey Local Area Plan, and the Active Transportation Plan, and will help foster a connected, pedestrian- and cycling-friendly neighbourhood.

What to expect
Some temporary changes to pedestrian and vehicle access may occur during construction. Directly affected property owners will be notified of any driveway disruptions.
Efforts will be made to minimize inconvenience for residents and maintain access to homes, schools, and transit.

Construction crews will be on site daily during the construction period. Traffic delay are expected in order for crews to safely carry out their work.

Phase 1: Carey Road between Gerda Street and Ridgebank Crescent
Improvements on Carey Road between Gerda Street and Ridgebank Crescent
- New raised crosswalks spanning Carey Road at Gerda Street as well as Ridgebank Crescent.
- New sidewalk between Gerda Street and Ridgebank Crescent on the East side of Carey Road.
- New asphalt for the roadway between Gerda Street and Ridgebank Crescent.
- Landscaping in areas where there is new separated sidewalk between the road edge and sidewalk.
