Carey Road Sidewalk Upgrade
Project overview
The District of Saanich will be undertaking active transportation upgrades along Carey Road. The Carey Road Sidewalk Upgrade project will deliver upgraded concrete sidewalks, curb drops, and related improvements to support safe and accessible travel for residents of all ages and abilities.
This project is a short-term priority under Saanich’s Active Transportation Plan and the Safe Routes to School program for Northridge Elementary and Glanford Middle School.
Project timeline
Work is ongoing and expected to wrap up by late August 2026.
Phase 2 is scheduled to start by late August 2026
📅 July 16: Special Conditions – Road Closure
A temporary road closure will be in effect on Thursday, July 16, from 9:00am to 12:00pm on Carey Road immediately north of Ridgebank Crescent. During this time, through traffic will not be permitted through the closure area.
Access details for this closure:
- Ridgebank Crescent will remain open.
- Residents living north of the closure should approach from the Wilkinson Road direction, as vehicle access through the closure area will not be permitted.
- Motorists should expect delays and use alternate routes where possible.

📅 April 23 Update
Crews have begun construction on Carey Road, starting near Ridgebank Crescent on the east side of the roadway and progressing north.
During construction, single-lane alternating traffic will be in place, with traffic controlled by flaggers. Lane closures will be in effect between 9:00am and 3:00pm to minimize impacts during peak travel times.

Access for residents and local traffic will remain open.
Motorists should expect delays during lane closure periods and are encouraged to plan travel times accordingly.
Construction will continue to progress north along Carey Road as work advances. Updates will be posted here as construction conditions change.

📅 April 9th Update
Crews are expected to begin construction in late April or early May on Carey Road as part of the upcoming infrastructure improvements in the area.

Why these upgrades?
Carey Road serves as an important link for families, students, and commuters, with transit connections to the Royal Oak Exchange, Uptown Shopping Centre, and Downtown Victoria. Current pedestrian infrastructure is inconsistent, with gaps and varying sidewalk types and widths. By upgrading sidewalks and crossings, the project will make walking and cycling safer options for all users.
These improvements are part of our ongoing efforts to support the Official Community Plan, Carey Local Area Plan, and the Active Transportation Plan, and will help foster a connected, pedestrian- and cycling-friendly neighbourhood.

What to expect
Some temporary changes to pedestrian and vehicle access may occur during construction. Directly affected property owners will be notified of any driveway disruptions.

Construction crews will be on site daily during the construction period. Traffic delay are expected in order for crews to safely carry out their work.

Phase 2: East side of Carey Road between Judah Street and Ridgebank Crescent
This phase includes improvements on the east side of Carey Road between Judah Street and Ridgebank Crescent, including:
- New and upgraded sidewalk sections, filling remaining sidewalk gaps.
- Enhanced connections to bus stops and improved bus stop accessibility.
- Accessible intersection crossings.
- New stormwater infrastructure.
- Street tree plantings where feasible.
