Chip Seal Paving 2025

Chip seal paving is scheduled for Tuesday, August 19 and Wednesday, August 20, with work taking place between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Planned order of locations:

  1. Prospect Lake Road – Prospect Avenue to Meadowbrook Road
  2. Goward Road – Prospect Lake Road to Echo Drive
  3. Goward Road – Excelsior Road to Spring Road
  4. Viaduct Avenue West – Interurban Road to Sarah Owen Place
  5. Conway Road – Interurban Road to Mountain Road

Chip sealing is a relatively quick operation. All locations are expected to be completed within these two days. Schedules may change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

Parking restrictions:

Please remove vehicles from the roadway before work begins.

Traffic impacts:

Temporary delays are expected. Please follow the instructions of traffic control personnel.

The District of Saanich will be chip sealing the following locations:

  • Conway Road - from Interurban Road to Mountain Road
  • Goward Road - from Prospect Lake Road to Echo Drive
  • Goward Road - from Excelsior Road to Spring Road
  • Prospect Lake Road - from Prospect Avenue to Meadowbrook Road
  • Viaduct Avenue West - from Sarah Owen Place to Interurban Road
  • Synod Road - from Cedar Hill Cross Road to Shorncliffe Road

Chip sealing is a roadway surface treatment that involves spraying a thin layer of asphalt onto the pavement, followed by an application of gravel chips. The chips are then rolled into the surface to create a durable and protective layer.

Chip sealing helps extend the life of our roads by sealing small cracks and preventing water and air from damaging the pavement. It also improves skid resistance and surface texture. This treatment is significantly more cost-effective than traditional asphalt resurfacing—about one-quarter of the cost—allowing the District to preserve more kilometers of roadway within our annual budget.

Work is expected to take place in late August and will take approximately one week to complete all locations.

Prior to chip sealing, maintenance crews may be on site to patch and level the roads.

Please note that the schedule is weather-dependent and may change due to unforeseen conditions.

For the latest updates, please check back on this page.

While we aim to minimize disruptions, some temporary traffic delays are expected. Please follow the direction of traffic control personnel.

Loose gravel will remain on the surface for about one week while the chip seal cures. It serves as a protective layer, providing a buffer between vehicles and the newly treated surface. To help reduce dust and minimize gravel displacement, please drive slowly and follow the posted speed limit.

Thank you for your patience as we work to maintain and improve Saanich’s roadways.
