Hampton Road Neighbourhood Bikeway
About the project
The District is installing cycling and pedestrian improvements on Hampton Road, between Tillicum Road and Harriet Road. The planned improvements will include:
- New signage along the route
- Pavement markings (“sharrows”) to indicate it is a shared road
- A new marked crosswalk east of Orillia Street
- Two speed humps
- A graded bike ramp connecting Hampton Road and the Tillicum Road multiuse path
What to expect
Some temporary changes to pedestrian and vehicle access may occur during construction. When Saanich crews are placing new pavement markings on the road, there are may be brief periods of single-lane alternating traffic (SLAT).
The majority of existing parking on Hampton Road will remain unchanged. As part of this work, minor parking restrictions will be implemented between Seaton Street and Millgrove Street. Nearby property owners have been informed via an earlier notification.
Efforts will be made to minimize inconvenience for residents and maintain access to homes, schools, and transit.
Why are we doing this?
The improvements will grow Saanich’s long-term cycling network and provide a formal east-west connection from the Tillicum area to the Saanich core. As a slower residential road, Hampton is a safer cycling option than busier corridors (like Burnside) and strengthens connections to popular land uses including Tillicum Mall, Hampton Park, Uptown Mall, and Rudd Park.
This work also complements the nearby Boleskine Road improvements by connecting to new cycling and pedestrian facilities (currently in progress).
This route was identified as part of the wider Neighbourhood Bikeways Identification and Prioritization Project. It involved technical analysis and community input to determine bikeway routes designed to promote safer travel throughout Saanich.

Please note the following impacts in late September/early October:
- September 24-25: Asphalt speed hump construction between Millgrove Street and Albion Road. This section will be closed as crews complete the installation. Detour signs will be in place.
- September 24: Asphalt bike ramp installation will result in a temporary closure of the shared path between Hampton and Tillicum Road. Closure is anticipated to be several hours.
- Week of September 28: Sign installation on Hampton Road. Traffic impacts will be minimal, but please stay aware while crews are working.

Neighbourhood bikeways are streets with low traffic and speed where people cycling and driving can safely share the road together. They play an important role in Saanich’s active transportation network by providing safe cycling connections located away from busy roads.
