Harriet Road Traffic Calming Improvements
About the project
The District is installing traffic calming improvements on Harriet Road, between Boleskine Road and Regina Avenue. The planned improvements include:
- Two new speed humps
- A new pop-up pedestrian island near Regina Avenue
- New signage
What to expect
Some temporary changes to pedestrian and vehicle access may occur during installation. Efforts will be made to minimize inconvenience for residents and maintain access to homes, schools, and transit.
The majority of existing parking on Harriet Road will remain unchanged. As part of this work, minor parking restrictions will be implemented near Regina Avenue, where the roadway is too narrow to safely accommodate parking and to maintain safe sightlines for drivers. Nearby property owners have been informed via an earlier notification.
Why are we doing this?
These improvements are designed to address road safety concerns in the Tillicum area and support safer driver behaviour. Harriet is a collector road that supports both local traffic and traffic from major corridors, so calming measures are appropriate to lower vehicle speeds and discourage shortcuts through this section of neighbourhood.
This project was identified as part of Saanich’s Traffic Calming Policy, which guides how traffic calming is planned and implemented across the community.

Traffic calming uses a mix of street design, communications, and sometimes enforcement to reinforce appropriate driving behaviour on neighbourhood streets.
Common examples of traffic calming measures are speed humps, curb extensions, chicanes, and traffic circles.
