Mortimer Street Sidewalk

Project Overview

March 27, 2026: This project has been delayed until further notice. Residents will be notified once it's re-scheduled.

The District of Saanich is undertaking transportation upgrades along Mortimer Street between 1534 Mortimer Street and 3905 Cedar Hill Road. The project includes:

· 160m of new sidewalk along the north side of Mortimer Street.

· 55m of new sidewalk, asphalt bike lane and concrete curb between Mortimer Street and 3907 Cedar Hill Road. Bus stop upgrade fronting 3901 Cedar Hill Road.

· New concrete curb return at the south side of Mortimer Street and Cedar Hill Road.

· Asphalt road widening, installation of extruded asphalt curb along the south side of Mortimer Street, and paving along Mortimer between Cedar Hill Road and Shelbourne Street.

· On-street parking will be removed along the south side of Mortimer Street.

Why are we doing this?

As part of the District's Safe Routes to School program and the Shelbourne Local Area Plan, Mortimer Street has been identified as needing upgrades to pedestrian infrastructure. This project specifically addresses those needs by constructing a sidewalk along Mortimer Street that connects Cedar Hill Middle School to the eastern Shelbourne Valley.

The new sidewalk constructed on Mortimer Street will connect to a new sidewalk and asphalt bike lane along Cedar Hill Road. This leads to a raised crosswalk that provides connection to Cedar Hill Middle School. These upgrades will provide safer pedestrian and cycling movements for students and residents.

The project is also recognized and supported within the District’s Active Transportation Plan as part of the cycling network for all ages and abilities.

Project Goals

This project aims to provide a continuous sidewalk for students attending Cedar Hill Middle School as part of the Safe Routes to School program, and cyclist facilities for those cycling from Cedar Hill Road to Shelbourne Street.
