Roof replacement – Gordon Head Recreation Centre Weight Room

Roof replacement at Gordon Head Recreation Centre Weight Room

Where are things at?

The District of Saanich is providing an update on the extended closure of the weight room at Gordon Head Recreation Centre (GHRC).

Crews are making excellent progress on the project, working to complete the expanded scope of work as efficiently as possible. In the coming week, visitors will begin to see the removal of scaffolding – weather pending, for the safety of crane crews – with HVAC work to follow.

Background

Work got underway in late spring 2025 to address a persistent moisture problem between the ceiling and the roof over the weight room. As remediation and repair work progressed, it became clear through investigation that the roof assembly needed to be replaced, significantly expanding the original scope of work and timeline.

Extensive design work was completed to ensure engineering design improvements were met and to take into account modern code requirements and seismic improvements. A complete roof assembly replacement tender was issued and awarded.

A temporary enclosure was built to protect the building from inclement weather and allow for safe winter construction.

Please stay tuned to the website and follow this project page for more details as they become available.

The District of Saanich recognizes the inconvenience caused by the extended closure of this valued community facility and sincerely appreciates the continued patience and understanding of its patrons.
