San Juan Neighbourhood Bikeway Improvements
About the project
The District will be installing new signage, pavement markings, and traffic calming measures in the Gordon Head neighbourhood. The project area is an east-west route that includes:
- San Juan Avenue: between Gordon Head Road and Shelbourne Street
- Elnido Road: between Shelbourne Street and Harvest Lane Park
- Jamaica Road: between Harvest Lane Park and Parkside Crescent
- Winchester Road: between Parkside Crescent and Glendenning Road
- Glendenning Road: between PKOLS and Mount Douglas Cross Road
- Malton Avenue: through to Simon Road
- Simon Road: to Mckenzie Avenue
What work is being done?
The planned improvements will include:
- New bike route signage along the full route
- New “sharrow” pavement markings along the full route
- Updated speed limit signage
- Minor brush trimming to improve sightlines and visibility
Traffic calming measures on:
- Simon Road: two speed humps between Mckenzie Ave and Eric Rd
- Parkside Cres and Winchester Rd Intersection: traffic circle
- San Juan Ave: Crosswalk pinch points on midblock crossings near Majestic Drive
Bike and pedestrian crossing improvements at:
- San Juan and Tyndall
- San Juan and Shelbourne
Why are we doing this?
These improvements will grow Saanich’s long-term cycling network and provide a comfortable east-west connection beginning near Arbutus Cove through to Braefoot Park and the Mckenzie corridor.
Updated signage and “sharrows” will encourage slower speeds, improve wayfinding, and help users connect to nearby destinations and travel corridors.
This route was identified as part of the wider Neighbourhood Bikeways Identification and Prioritization Project. It involved technical analysis and community input to determine bikeway routes designed to promote safer travel throughout Saanich.
