Saanich Tree Protection Bylaw Updates
Project Overview
The District of Saanich is updating the Tree Protection Bylaw. Updating the Bylaw will help the Parks Division align tree management across Saanich, towards achieving 44% canopy cover by 2064.
The project aims to:
- Align the Bylaw with Saanich’s Urban Forest Strategy and Official Community Plan
- Simplify and clarify Bylaw administration
- Sustain the urban forest and retain high-value trees
- Address gaps not covered by current regulations
Where we're at - June 4, 2026
Following public engagement in November and December of 2025 (including a virtual open house and HelloSaanich questionnaire), staff will share a project update with Council on Monday, June 8, 2026. Following the update to Council, staff will continue drafting Tree Bylaw changes based on background research, community engagement, and existing Saanich policy direction. Bylaw drafting, testing and legal review will continue through Fall 2026.
The June 8 Council agenda is available online and includes a Staff Report and Draft Engagement Summary.
